I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't know his catalog very well. I should, because I'm plenty old enough to know all about David Bowie's career, but I guess I just haven't focused on him that much. He had a song I liked a lot back in the early '80s, something called "Let's Dance," which had the line, "Put on your red shoes and dance the blues." He has kind of a distinctive voice, not one I really like a whole lot, but on some things, it works.

It's been a while since I've been here. Work's been a bear, and I've been running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, but I did manage to get through most of your responses.
I woudl love to hear thea Decca collection that I read about. I also love a good TRADITIONALY sung rendition of various Christmas songs and Advent songs like "Coventry Carol," "Ding Dong Merily on High" and "Pat a pan." The band and Madrigals at my college can rais the hair n your arms in their renditions of the various Christmas songs that they sing.

I recently ran across a version of Little Drummer Boy by Charlotte Church on YouTube which I liked a lot. Great arrangement, I thought.
My husband and I were talking about favorite Christmas carols last night. We agreed that we can't name just one we love. One of our favorites, though, is O Little Town of Bethlehem. We both enjoy the religious hymns, and I especially turn onto the ones that convey a sense of mystery, like that one, and like the Appalachian carol, I Wonder as I Wander.
I guess the three I like best that you are likely to hear in church are O Come All Ye Faithful, Joy to the World, and Silent Night. It's hard to beat those old stand-bys. O Holy Night is universally beloved, I think, but it is more of a soloist's song, not so good for congregational singing.

i love the little drummer boy too!! a rock band did a version of this song and it was REALLY good... i can't think of their name for anything but man those guys are talented.. very experimental and if i'm not mistaken, they were all music majors
I love the duet Bing Crosby did with David Bowie years ago, the medley of Little Drummer Boy with Peace on Earth. You can find it on YouTube pretty easily.
I have not heard that version with David Bowie, I'll have to look it up!!! Thanks!!
Adrian have you thought of the band yet I will try to look them up too.
Bella I love the old song too with Bing Crosby too, old Blue eyes, my dad still loves listening to him all the time!!

All I see are two performers who would rather be any place else than with each other, on that set, singing that song.
You can feel the tension from 4 decades ago through the screen!

Oh, wow, does it affect you like that? I think what comes across to you as "tension" may just be the stiltedness of the fictional scene they are playing. That's the way all those old variety specials were. I loved them back in the day, though.
I'm not sure of the date of this one. I want to say 1977. If so, Bing Crosby was most likely dead before it aired. He died of a heart attack in the fall of '77, IIRC.

I was at the Madrigal Singers concert last Friday, and at the Chorale concert last Sunday, and the music was fabulous. Raised the hair on my arms.

I never missed the Bing or Andy Williams Christmas specials, they were awesome. Apparently Mrs. Crosby is still kicking. Their house is one town over from home.
